Match Report
The second Saturday of the season brought blue skies and 10 eager Ploughmen to DSG on time. One man decided Victoria Station was the best place to be at 1230 on a Saturday instead.
An unnamed Ploughman has since suggested multiple map apps have a “arrive by” function that could be of possible use going forward.
Anyway onto the game… Big JT tossed and lost.
Another excellent idea was suggested at this point, as James is likely to be significantly taller than any other skipper’s he tosses with this season instead of shaking their hand post-toss he should pat them on top of the head instead wishing them luck for the day in an ultimate Alpha move.
We were invited to bat, on a green but pretty consistent early-season DSG wicket. Hickson and Britto fresh from watching the IPL got us to 11 for 2 off 11 overs…. eek. The Dulwich opening pair were good, bowling no real give me balls but I feel a few more games into the season we may have been more aggressive and whilst we might both be out still the scoreboard might have accrued more.
With both Gumperts in next the scoreboard increased but in fairness to Dulwich their change bowlers continued to control our run rate, Ploughmans were being Ploughman’d by Dulwich. Good bowling and tight fielding starving the batsmen.
At drinks Fred (Fuzz) indicated to Max to keep working hard. In some sibling gameplay, Max Alpha’d Fred and paid the price driving a ball to mid-off first ball after drinks. JT came in and looked good and we looked set to get to 160.
We continued to lose wickets at completely the wrong time though, Fred for a well complied 29 and James for a pretty 26. Lonnen went a bit WG and refused to leave the wicket after being given out LBW. Hamilton, Lewis and Paul played some nice strokes each to get us to 126.
If we are honest half of us didn’t get in and the half that did didn’t go on.
Tea was epic. The volume of cheese per bread roll broke the EU threshold and is exactly why 51% of the population voted to leave (let’s not forget there are two types).
We took the field knowing early wickets were our only hope. Lonnen and Gray started well with Tom, in particular, troubling both openers. At 5 for 1 Hickson mentioned we were ahead of them at “this stage”.
Their 16-year-old opener was class though, blunting our attack and playing some nice strokes. Our second breakthrough came from a wonderful throw from Hickson in the deep and we had a sniff. Could 20 for 2 become 40 for 4? We tried.
Paul and Willaby [sic] replaced our openers and continued to search for wickets. Lewis brought the family to the game and they saw a great spell of bowling from him, with Hockings taking a blinder at midwicket (the kind of ball where you either catch it or it will hurt you).
Hockings and Gumpert tried to break the steady Dulwich batting, but our last wicket came through another run-out, this time from Hamilton.
All in all a good run out against a very decent Dulwich side…..
