Match Report

You may have heard rumours of a cricket match being played on Sunday.  Yes that is right – Ploughmans were in action. Lovely day at Dulwich made even brighter when Nigel turned up and seriously questioning whether he could throw the game in order to watch England play in the World Cup Final.

With literally all club cricket being cancelled, Plough were given the luxury to choose which pitch to play on. Grayzer rather magnificently decided to bat 1st in order to allow AJ to begin drinking earlier. Openers got Plough off to a solid start with Jules punishing any loose deliveries and Britto providing the strong and stable reassurance we all need on a Sunday. Oppo fought back with the wicket of Jules, which brought Trent to the crease who looked in seriously good touch. Further cameos from Nick Dowell [42] and Paul Hynes [21] allowed Plough to compile a total.  Unfortunately no big knock was due on Sunday as Plough finished on 216 -8. Big credit to Britto for top scoring with 49 – definitely jug avoidance.

As all Ploughman are legends, the England score was regularly updated via a 2nd score board. A gesture that was greatly appreciated by all playing. Lunch was taken; the Plough loaded up and watched the highlights of New Zealand’s innings.

Oppo went out to bat and Plough opened up with the Earl and Carson. Oppo went swinging at the start and were lucky not to lose more than the 1 wicket. Grayzer elected to bring on club legend Nick who bowled with pace and control, AJ was also brought on. Eventually AJ produced the 2nd wicket which created pressure for the oppo as they started to look nervous about chasing 216. Nick produced the 3rd wicket which reduced the oppo to 80-3.

The Plough started to chip away however runs became accessible for the oppo, which allowed S.W. United to play with more freedom. A further wicket from AJ and 2 from Nige brought the game back into contention with Plough needing 3 wickets and the opposition needing 30 runs.

Today was not meant to be as the oppo were able to accelerate when necessary, which allowed them to knock down the total with 12 balls and 3 wickets to spare. Despite the loss, Plough played valiantly. Despite being opposition on the pitch, all 22 players ran to watch England and New Zealand compete on what can only be described as the greatest final ever!
