Match Report
Saturday’s league game brought former Division 2 rivals Croydon to DSG. Despite heavy rainfall all week, John and his team’s (Son of John) efforts provided a decent if low and slow Hollies wicket.
Fred won an important toss and inserted Croydon. Liam and Ash opened up. Both used conditions well to ensure Croydon despite their efforts didn’t break away. If you’re going to bowl through you need to take wickets and we edged the first 16 overs with Ash collecting his second wicket in his final over. Croydon were 60-4 after 16.
Stu and Logan “the Rudder” Cassin. Both will bowl better but Stu managed a decent caught and bowled during his spell.
Fred with options limited turned to the double spin threat of Bees and Parrish. Its great to have Bees back as a plough. He didn’t disappoint in the field or with ball. Ron does what he always does, bowling consistently and cutting boundary balls. He definitely has “a faster bowler’s attitude in a spinner’s body”. I think it’s fair to say everyone at the ground and supporting was happy to see him bowl well and be rewarded with wickets.
Parrish bowls some good balls and some less good. Today was a good if not exceptional day. Tom will be rewarded with more consistency but again showed a canny knack for taking wickets. He manged to bag a couple during his spell. He would have had a third but for the bump ball “issue” but lets move on from that.
Wickets were shared with Liam, Ash, Ron and Tom taking a Queen a piece.
Importantly we’d bowled out Croydon in 34 overs, 126 needed to win.
Tea was ok.
Plough’s chase started badly as (the porky pie thali of a wicket created havoc) I missed a straight ball. Stu and Jules rebuilt steadily. Jules wrestling control with a six over long on against their opening seamer. Jules departed LBW and Logan came and went for 8.
With Plough in a potential pickle, Fred joined the anchor Stu and set about shutting down Croydon’s slim hopes. Both batted sensibly with only Fred having a minor brain explosion giving long on catching practice that he decided to drop. Even if that had been taken with Trent, Liam, Kesh and Tom still to come I’m confident we would have got over the line.
Fred smashed it to all parts on his way to an unbeaten 58. Stu was more reserved for a well made 35 no which included an excellent pull for six onto the road.
PLOUGH WIN and still top of the league.
