Report
The Plough traveled down the A3 to play Chessington in Uncle Nige’s much anticipated grudge match against his drinking buddy’s club. Si Carson decided to pick a very strong Sunday team to ensure that we could get the job done for Nige.
Having won the toss on a pitch that looked like an absolute road, Chessington quickly accelerated to 45 without loss, with a young opener doing his best Stokes impersonation by scoring 44 of the runs and smashing us to all parts. Just as we were looking like having to spend all day chasing leather, Tom ‘whatsapp’ Lonnen decided that there was only one way to stop the teenager. He dragged his length to just back of a length and struck the lad on his hip bone – subsequently immobilizing him ala Archer v Smith. His injury forced him off the field which brought in their skipper, who wasn’t too happy when Lonnen cleaned up his off stump second ball – followed by a classic fast bowler stare down.
This wicket opened up the floodgates with change bowlers Big Drew McEwan and Carlos ‘CJ’ Johnson bowling superbly to each snare 3 of Chessington’s top order batsmen. The highlight was when McEwan sent their other opener off by calling him ‘paper weight’ because of his low scoring rate and was then told to ‘go f*** yourself.’ So much for a Sunday friendly! Spence also managed to take 4 catches at midwicket and now leads the fielding stats.
After drinks Nige and AJ came on to bamboozle the oppo with some tasty spin to clean up the tail. The moment of the innings was when Nige brought up his 100th wicket for the Plough. What an amazing achievement for the great man. His final wicket saw Chessington fall to 92 runs having lost 10 for 50.
After a short tea break we came out and chased down their total inside 15 overs with Stu Campbell hitting 73 not out from 50 balls. Supported well by Nick Ridgway with a boring 17 runs (according to the sideline).
Another TEN wicket win to the Plough but most importantly THREE wins for the club in the one weekend. A feat I’m sure doesn’t come around too often.
