LEAGUE – Ploughmans CC v Woking XI CC (Home) Sat 25th June 2016

Match Report

Saturday started out with little hope of a game amidst the gloomy forecasts. However, the 11 still all got down to Woking to turn out for the Plough against a strong side who sit atop the table.

Batting first Chris Ovens and Adam Barraclough started well, knocking it about until the rain came in. With the already shortened game shortened further, we were left with some work to do to pick up the run rate.

Despite the solid start, a variable pitch and some on the spot bowling saw us reach 144 off our 37 overs. Special shout to Aruran who showed some class at 6 to give us a needed boost in the batting.

Despite the lower than needed score the heads didn’t drop. Some rousing words from skipper Freddie helped us to keep them to just 79-4 by drinks at 19 overs. Some top bowling from Tom Lonnen, though unrewarded, Aruran, taking 2, and Ed Beesley. Ross Lonsdale also helped keep the batsmen guessing with some good bouncers and full balls.

However, after tea our excellent fielding standard dropped. Dropped catches from myself, Boydy, Tom and Grant, despite some of their difficulty, helped let one too many of their batsmen off and they chased it down with just 6 wickets gone in 34 overs.

All in all, it was not an awful performance against a top team and showed we are not far off challenging for the top spots in the league. A little bit more of a ruthless streak at some crucial points and it could have been different. Onto the next weekend.

C’arn the Plough!

Harry Davies.
